The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a maritime security force responsible for safeguarding India’s territorial waters and enforcing maritime laws. Established on 1st February 1977 under the Ministry of Defence, it plays a crucial role in coastal surveillance, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and environmental protection. The ICG operates under the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard (DGICG) and has five regional commands: West, East, North-East, North-West, and Andaman & Nicobar. Equipped with patrol vessels, hovercrafts, helicopters, and aircraft, it ensures maritime safety and security. It also conducts search and rescue (SAR) operations and assists in disaster relief efforts during cyclones and tsunamis. Additionally, the ICG works closely with the Indian Navy, state marine police, and other agencies to enhance coastal security. Over the years, it has significantly contributed to protecting India’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and marine biodiversity. The ICG remains a vital force in maintaining law and order in India’s vast maritime domain. Its motto, “Vayam Rakshamah,” means “We Protect.”
